Let's Talk pH

The potential of hydrogen aka pH is the term used to express the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale of 0 to 14. Neutral solutions such as water measure at 7 on the pH scale. A solution that measures less than 7 is acidic. Examples of acidic solutions are aloe vera juice and lemon juice. Baking soda and lye are examples of alkaline substances as their pH measures above 7.

You are probably wondering what the pH level of a product has to do with your hair so let me break it down for you. The normal pH of human hair and scalp is between 4.5 and 5.5. Using alkaline products such as relaxers and hair coloring lift the hair cuticle and strip your hair of natural oils leaving your hair looking damaged and dull. Dry hair is prone to breakage so it's important to use products that are pH balanced to help maintain healthy hair. The hair cuticle will remain closed when using products that are pH balanced which will produce frizz free and shiny hair. In order to achieve optimum results use products that have pH that ranges from 4-6.

Check out this video from Kimmay where she tests the pH in some popular products used among naturals. For other great tips on how to control your hair's pH be sure to search her YouTube channel.

Until next times kurlies...stay pH balanced, your hair will thank you for it!!

xoxo,

Eve
