~Tonia Does Her Big Chop~

I posted last week how excited I was that my friend and co-worker Tonia was taking the plunge and doing her big chop. We've talked about her doing her BC but I had no idea that without any hesitation she would agree to do it that week. One of the most important things I learned while transitioning is not to pressure a person into going natural so I wanted to make sure she was really ready to do it and did not feel pressured to take that step. All week I asked "are you sure you are ready to do it now?" and every time she would quickly respond and say "yes"!

For Tonia it was only appropriate to have a few girlfriends accompany her to the salon for this big event. Four of her friends, myself included joined her at Avalon Hair & Color Studio where stylist Brittani would have the pleasure of doing her big chop. Once we arrived at the salon Tonia was all smiles and even as Brittani began to cut her gorgeous locs she didn't appear to have an ounce of fear.

After Tonia's relaxed ends had been cut off Brittani twisted her hair using ReVe Essentials Moisturizing Creme and put her under the hair dryer to allow the twist to set. We continued to laugh and joke as we anxiously waited to see the final results. About 40 minutes later the stylist began removing the twist and suddenly Tonia's facial expression began to change. I could see the look of concern in her eyes as Brittani took her shears and started shaping Tonia's curly tresses. I asked her was she ok and she said "I'm ok" but I could tell she was having that moment when you begin to wonder "what have I done". We all gathered around and told her how cute her hair was and helped reassure her that she made the right decision. Slowly but surely that look of concern disappeared and she began to smile. She realized her "sexy" had not gone away and she returned to the cheery Tonia we all know and love!
By the time Tonia left the salon Brittani and I breathed a sigh of relief because for a moment we thought Tonia would hate both of us!! For a girl who had never has her hair cut before I think she handled it like a trooper! I was/am so proud of her and excited for the journey that is to come!
Congratulations Tonia and thank you so much for allowing me to document the official beginning of your new journey!!!

TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-NaturallyCandi

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Candice aka Candi and I’m from Miami Florida =)

How long have you been natural?
1 Year and 10 lovely months

Why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural because I was tired of burning my hair and scalp just to have straight hair that wasn’t naturally mines!

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
Kinky 4a 4b 3c type hair! I have nappy naps.

What is your hair care regimen?
I deep condition at least once ever 2 weeks and I keep all of my products simple. I wash and condition using Giovanni products and I blow dry and then twist or braid my hair using my shea butter and coconut oil mix.

What are your favorite hair products?
My shea abutter and coconut oil mix and Giovanni direct leave in.

What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
I’ve been through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I feel like going natural has helped me become more confident in the woman that I am. I’m a lot more conscious about not only what I put in my hair but what I use on my skin and what I eat and it’s all because of this natural journey that I’ve started.

What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Don’t stress your growth! Be patient and don’t compare your hair to anyone else’s, you are unique and so is your hair.

Do you have a blog, vlog, or website where we can find you?
Yes, my YouTube is Youtube.com/naturallycandi, my blog Candijanoki.tumblr.com and you can also like me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/NaturallyCandi/195097050554033

Final thoughts or words of wisdom?
You are beautiful relaxed or natural don’t let you hair define you. Don’t feel pressured to do something just because everyone else is doing it, do what feels good to you and what makes you happy!

Thanks for sharing Candi!!!

TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-Cyrelle George

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Cyrelle and I hail from The Bronx, NY.

How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for over 3 years.  I did my big chop December 28, 2008. I wore my hair lower than a twa for the first 2 years.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I was determined to define beautiful according my own standards.  I was so over hearing so called hair care “professionals” state that as a black woman I needed a perm in order for my hair to become more manageable.

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
I am definitely in the 4 type hair category.  I have a mixture of 4a through 4c in “Cymone”, that’s my hair’s name.

What is your hair care regimen?
I wash every 7 to days with Terressentials Hair Mud wash, Deep Condition while sitting under the steamer, apply Naturlista Cosmetic Juicy leave –in and finish up with ReVe’ Essentials as my moisturizing styler.

What are your favorite hair products?
Darcy’s Botanicals Deep/Pumpkin Condition and ReVe’ Essentials Hair & Body Moisturizing Crème.

What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
In the beginning my experience was horrible because I was not mentally ready to embrace the beauty of being natural.  I was still buying into the notion that my natural hair was unmanageable and it was not polished.  It was not until I was finally able to love my hair that I was able to enjoy it.  Now, you cannot tell me, my cottony soft and shrink in a heart beat hair is not the best thing in the world.

What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Every hair journey is unique.  And yes there are resources available to help along the way but ultimately it comes down to what works and was does not work for your hair.  As well as loving your hair and wearing it confidently is what makes this journey beautiful.

Do you have a blog, vlog, or website where we can find you?
Yes, I have a youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ctgwillis

Final thoughts or words of wisdom?
Do what is best for your hair. Use all natural hair resources that are available as an aid but not as the ultimate authority.  Every natural hair experience is personal and different.

Thanks for sharing Cyrelle!!

TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-Tiffany Goodwin

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Tiffany Goodwin, and I’m from Cleveland, OH

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since August 2007; I remember this date because I just had my youngest child about 2 months before.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I really didn’t decide. My stylist, Ladosha Wright, basically convinced me into going natural.  After having my son I got back into the routine of going every two weeks, and every appointment I would say to her, “you think it’s time for a touch up?” and she would say “Do you think so?”  I would look at my hair and say, “I guess not really”, because it would really stay straight for like the whole two weeks.  My mother was already natural and going to the same stylist and I looked at her hair and thought maybe it wouldn’t be that bad and from there I guess that’s how I made my decision.

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
2C-wavy

What is your hair care regimen?
I usually wash my hair once a week, followed by blow drying and then flat ironing and applying dime size amount of olive oil through out the week.

What are your favorite hair products?
Mizani Purifying Shampoo, Mizani Scalp Care Conditioner, and olive oil

What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
My experience has been good, my stylist has taught me many tricks to keep it straight and avoid frizziness.  I would have to say it has definitely has changed my hair for the better which give me more self-confidence.

What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Do what’s best for you and your hair.  Every technique may not work on your hair so don’t get discouraged.  And sometimes going natural may not be what’s best for you or your current situation.  Going natural really means you have to take the time to style your hair.

Do you have a blog, vlog, or website where we can find you?
I’m currently working on a blog spot where I’ll be sharing recipes, but that’s still a work in progress.  But I’m on FB and twitter.

Final thoughts or words of wisdom?
One tip: When natural to avoid frizziness when you shower or bath use a towel to wrap you hair, not a shower cap.  The plastic collects to steam that causes your hair to get frizzy, but the towel absorbs the moisture.

Thank you for sharing your story Tiffany!!

TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-Jeaneen Alise

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Jeaneen and I’m from Riverside California (born and raised in sunny Southern California)
How long have you been natural?
I honestly haven’t been keeping count, but if I think back I’d say about 3 years now (I relapsed the first year).
Why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural because I noticed that my hair was thinning out. It’s funny, when I was younger my hair was super thick and it was a PAIN to comb it (plus being tender headed didn’t help either). But no matter all the trouble my hair gave me, I was really proud of it. Overtime I could feel my texture changing. With many years of relaxers, I noticed that my hair was more manageable. You’d think I’d be happy - but I wasn’t. The change put me on high alert and I started noticing every little thing about my hair (the limp texture after a relaxer, the high amount of breakage with a high amount of hair left on the bathroom counter top). It was finally the appearance of a tiny bald spot that freaked me out. From that point on, I was done with chemicals - but it wasn’t an easy break.

For starters, I had some internal struggles. When you grow up with a negative perception of “nappy hair” it’s hard to shake those feelings. My main concern, was the presentation. I remember what my uncombed hair looked like when I was younger and I just couldn’t picture me with that on my head on me as an adult. It took me a couple of attempts, I had even relapsed and went back to relaxers for a while -- but after about a year of growing my hair out with braids, I got brave enough to go fully natural......and MAN was it liberating.
With all those other non-natural hair styles, I had realized that I’d been hiding. The amount of confidence I had with my real hair was a bit overwhelming at first. I got A LOT of compliments and a lot of notice. With natural hair, what you see is what you get and I had to bite the bullet and just OWN it -- even on good or bad hair days. Now I’m so use to it, I couldn’t have my hair any other way. I thoroughly enjoy taking care of my natural hair and the cost savings are amazing too. Yep, you’d pretty much have to club me over the head to make me go back to relaxed hair.

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
I’d say 4b or 4c (It’s definitely in the 4 category)
What is your hair care regimen?
For Weekly Styling:
  1. I wash (see bi-weekly washing below) on Sunday and twist out with apricot kernel oil and water. It leaves my hair soft to the touch. I don’t really re-twist during the week cause I honestly don’t have the time. I give my hair a breather (Monday-Saturday). At night I satin cap it and in the morning I fluff it out with water and sometimes a water/ oil mix (applied with a water bottle and sprayer).
Washing:
  1. Once a month I use clay on my hair -- that’s right CLAY (volcanic ash rather). I learned, through some experimentation that clay is the best thing for turning my hair back to it’s natural healthy state. Oh man - the curls I get are AMAZING! I use a mix of French Green Clay, Terraessentials Hair Wash (lavender), Apple Cider Vinegar & water. This mix gets all the left over build up out my hair, it’s great for dangling and works wonders on your face was well. Volcanic ash naturally sucks up dirt and toxins so why not use it on your hair? You can use this mix without Terraessentials! I just use it because it has some great essential oils in there and I have a couple of bottles left over. I usually leave the mix on for 15-20 minutes - I re-wet it first with a few squirts of water, then I plastic cap it. If I want to get my hair super clean, I re-wet it - plastic cap it - wrap it with a t-shit towel and take a nap (LOL).
  2. Bi-weekly (or weekly) I use Curly Kinky Come Clean. After the wash and with my hair still soaking-wet, I apply a shea butter mix (with various oils) - then twist my hair with apricot kernel oil and water. You have to try it! It truly leaves my hair soft to the touch and it maintains my curls all week. I was using grapeseed oil and EVO but that left my hair waxy feeling. Apricot Kernel Oil gives it a natural soft feeling.
  3. Conditioning...humm -- now here’s the crazy part... I don’t really need to condition my hair but for those random times that I do, I just soak my hair in water, plastic cap it and wrap a t-shirt towel over my head. I go about my business or even take a nap. Sometimes I will apply the shea butter mix to the soaked hair.
What are your favorite hair products?
I truly can’t live without - Shea Butter, Apricot Kernel Oil, Water, French Green Clay, Terraessentials Hair wash (Lavender), Curly Kinky Come Clean, plastic caps, satin pillow cases, satin caps, denman brush D3 and t-shirts (on clearance in the men’s department at Target) that I can cut to make towels.
What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
Like with any other hair routine - it’s work but it gets better as you learn how to manage your hair. My overall experience is definitely GOOD! I’m so glad I managed to repair the damage chemicals have done to my hair and again -- I’m saving soo much time and money. I no longer feel like a slave to relaxers, the beauty salon and appointments. I also don’t feel a slave to worrying about what other people think cause I know I look good :0)
What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Do your research, trial and error made me really love my hair and the process. I get so excited seeing and touching those curls. Just have fun and experiment with all sort of products and oils to find what works for you.

Final thoughts or words of wisdom?
Learn to love what GOD has given you cause it truly is a gift! Black hair is sooo beautiful - you can do so much with it, but it’s also very fragile. Once you loose your hair by mistreating it, it’s possible that it will never come back. Your hair is your crowning glory, so put fourth the time and effort to take care of it -- don’t try to seek the easy way out. Be proud of your hair and rock that natural!

TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-Dawnyele Partee

Twist Out
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Dawnyele and I am from Gary, Indiana.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 2 years and 7 months.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I went natural because of a very bad relaxer and highlight combination.  My hair quickly started to break off and shed excessively!  I was done with all chemical hair treatments at that point and decided to grow my natural hair out.

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
My hair is 4B in the back and from the crown to the front is 4c. The back is very kinky and spirally where as the front is very kinky with no curl pattern at all.

What is your hair care regimen?
I wash my hair every 2 weeks (depends on the style I’m wearing), any hair washes in between that are just quick co-washes.  My regimen is very basic:  Pre-poo for 30min, wash & finger detangle, deep condition overnight, then rinse conditioner with cold water the next day and style.

What are your favorite hair products?
My staple hair wash is Terressentials Organic Pure Earth Hair Wash...co-washer is Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner.  My favorite product line is Koils by Nature, the entire line!  I also love B.A.S.K. Beauty Cacao Bark Deep Conditioner & Shea Moisture African Black Deep Treatment Masque as pre-poos.

Afro
What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
Honestly, I’ve had a little of all 3 experiences.  It took me awhile to get the hang of things and really learn about how to properly care for my natural hair.  I’ve been through it all from heat damage, breakage/split ends, protein overload, too much manipulation, and harsh detangling session.  My poor hair! I was determined to have a healthy head of hair so I had to make some serious changes in my life and hair care regimen that worked like a charm!  Eating healthier, drinking lots of water, taking vitamins, and exercising.  The connection I have with my hair now is unbelievable and I could not be happier with it now.

What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Patience is very important!  You must be patient with your hair, do your own research and figure out a healthy hair care regimen for you, set goals for yourself but be careful not to obsess too much over your hair and growth that you do not have fun with it. Be confident no matter what anyone else thinks or how anyone else feels about your transitioning or natural hair and ROCK IT!
