TKK Natural Hair Spotlight-Dawnyele Partee

Twist Out
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Dawnyele and I am from Gary, Indiana.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 2 years and 7 months.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I went natural because of a very bad relaxer and highlight combination.  My hair quickly started to break off and shed excessively!  I was done with all chemical hair treatments at that point and decided to grow my natural hair out.

What is your hair type and how would you describe it (kinky, curly, wavy, spirally, etc)?
My hair is 4B in the back and from the crown to the front is 4c. The back is very kinky and spirally where as the front is very kinky with no curl pattern at all.

What is your hair care regimen?
I wash my hair every 2 weeks (depends on the style I’m wearing), any hair washes in between that are just quick co-washes.  My regimen is very basic:  Pre-poo for 30min, wash & finger detangle, deep condition overnight, then rinse conditioner with cold water the next day and style.

What are your favorite hair products?
My staple hair wash is Terressentials Organic Pure Earth Hair Wash...co-washer is Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner.  My favorite product line is Koils by Nature, the entire line!  I also love B.A.S.K. Beauty Cacao Bark Deep Conditioner & Shea Moisture African Black Deep Treatment Masque as pre-poos.

What has been your experience as a natural? Good, bad, or ugly? How has it affected you?
Honestly, I’ve had a little of all 3 experiences.  It took me awhile to get the hang of things and really learn about how to properly care for my natural hair.  I’ve been through it all from heat damage, breakage/split ends, protein overload, too much manipulation, and harsh detangling session.  My poor hair! I was determined to have a healthy head of hair so I had to make some serious changes in my life and hair care regimen that worked like a charm!  Eating healthier, drinking lots of water, taking vitamins, and exercising.  The connection I have with my hair now is unbelievable and I could not be happier with it now.

What is an important piece of advice you would give to a newly natural?
Patience is very important!  You must be patient with your hair, do your own research and figure out a healthy hair care regimen for you, set goals for yourself but be careful not to obsess too much over your hair and growth that you do not have fun with it. Be confident no matter what anyone else thinks or how anyone else feels about your transitioning or natural hair and ROCK IT!
